Founded in 1895 by Thomas Oliver, the Oliver Typewriter company in Chicago sold over a million machines before going bankrupt in 1928. Oliver typewriters were the first downstroke models to allow "visible printing" while typing. A British company bought the rights to the company and continued typewriter production until the late 1950s.
