Bar Lock gets its name from a series of pins used to guide and lock each typewriter bar as it reaches the pressure point.

The design of this typewriter was first patented by Charles Spiro of New York in 1889, and the first models were simply called Bar Lock. The name Columbia Bar-Lock was introduced beginning in about 1900.
