Japy was already a traditional company when it started producing typewriters in 1910. Frédéric Japy (1749 – 1812) was a clockmaker at Beaucourt in Franche-Comté. He is considered the founder of industrial watch production. 

After World War II, Japy was manufacturing typewriters under license from Hermès-Paillard. Finally in 1971 the company was acquired by Hermès-Paillard and production in Beaucourt was discontinued.
