The Adler Company first began manufacturing typewriters, bicycles, and motor vehicles in Germany in the late 19th century. The company's first typewriter was introduced in 1898. This machine had a push rod mechanism in which the typewriter rods were placed horizontally. When the user pressed a key, the machine pushed the typewriter stick forward. This was a significantly different design from other typewriters at the time, which mostly used an up or down stroke motion.
